HOW BEST TO FIND A JOB IN A DOWN TURN – BY VAUGHAN STOREY AT LEADING EDGE CONSULTING.

April 23, 2012 · Posted in Discussion Forum, Live Jobs · Comment

As is all too common nowadays, I took a call from a good friend on Friday with the sad news that he had received a redundancy letter.

Asking for my help, I spent that evening on the web, researching the job boards and career sites to find Engineering sector recruitment companies as my specialization is IT whilst he is in manufacturing, so I have no contacts in that sector to draw upon.

Surprised at the number of job boards around, on Saturday morning I brought a A3 piece of paper and stared eating though Careers24, Career Junctions, Pnet, Jobvine … Short listing recruiters in his market for him to contact.

After a good few hours research, I realized that there is not a single job board used by every recruitment company.

By late afternoon I had discovered 20 good search firms for him and offered the following advise … Take the time to post his resume on every job board as this is the only way to guarantee visibility in the online world of today and spend time setting up a professional Linkedin profile.

I thought that I would share this experience as a few years back things were much simpler, all we had to do was buy a couple of newspapers… trade magazines and we were off and away, with the demise of the print industry those days have simply disappeared, hence this is a logical approach to job searching in today’s labour market.

Conversely this trend has also had an impact on the search for talent by employers. Should you be in the systems sector looking for work else additional staff, contact Leading Edge Consulting on 011 568 0909 or meet us on LinkedIn or submit your CV online now

Why is President Zuma concerned about an IT skills shortage? The answer is right under his nose!

February 20, 2012 · Posted in Discussion Forum · Comment

Posted Monday 20th February 2012. On IT Web on a Sunday afternoon catching up with the gossip, I was surprised by Mr Zuma’s statement about there being an IT skills shortage in SA … My guess is that he is not engaging with the right people in the industry, what is your take on the subject?

I am sure you recall that a few years back Thabo Mbeki ignored the advise of experts in the energy industry with regards to investing in the national grid as the Government rolled out their electrification program.

By the time he apologized to Parliament on the telly for getting Eskom wrong, the country had lost most of the expertise from this sector to New Zealand and Australia in the main, whilst we all got lumbered with inflated energy bills … To my mind, Mr Mbeki’s legacy.

President Zuma is going down the same road with regards to the information technology sector, as there is not a skills shortage in SA at the moment, would someone sit the gentleman down and show him LinkedIn, PNET, Career Junction…SA is awash with qualified systems people.

What he will notice immediately though is that most of the senior people in IT are not African, whilst most of the junior and mid level skilled people are, this is because the Corporates have bent over backwards to exceed their BEE commitments.

All the Government needs to do now is give the more junior people time to develop their skills and put BEE on ice for a couple of years so that the senior people can earn enough income to pay for the more junior peoples salaries …. Sensible idea?

My fear is that if companies and professionals continue to be denied opportunities, they will give up, leave the country and create an Eskom II scenario.

After Mr Malema’s conduct last year, it is now time to stop finger pointing and have intelligent round table discussions about how SA can best lever the national intellectual property for the greater benefit of all…Because calming down on the BEE front will immediately solve the skills shortage problem.

Should you be in the information technology industry and find yourself looking for a new job else need to find skills, pop into www.lec.co.za call in on 011 568 0909 or 082 413 6786 else reach me on LinkedIn….Vaughan Storey

BOOLEAN IS THE “SILVER BULLET” INTERNET SEARCH METHOD BY LEADING EDGE CONSULTING

January 24, 2012 · Posted in Discussion Forum · Comment

Posted Tuesday 24th January 2012. With a billion members on Facebook by year end, Google+ set to increase their membership from 60 to 400 Million by Christmas along with good old LinkedIn having over 135 Million members at the moment … Boolean is the “silver bullet” for E-Social research along with BTOB / BTOC … So what’s it all about?

To define … Boolean is the science of joining words and common terms together within a cluster or string in a report which when applied to a social site else a CV search engine, automatically find people else flag business opportunities which are associated with that particular word string.

A common sense search methodology which levers taxonomies to speed read thousands of documents in multiple places concurrently, pre build Boolean systems deliver their findings directly into your mail box else in our case, a data warehouse.

Boolean is not trendy fashion tech, it is a defacto approach to search which extracts value from the huge memberships sat in multiple on-line communities quickly and accurately along with being a powerful everyday research tool .

The origins of Boolean … Back in the mid 80’s I read a thought provoking article in The Times written by a language professor … Having a good old moan about Microsoft and Apple corrupting the English language with Americanisms … His message being “Where would it all end up?”

Into the 90’s this trend sped up on the back of the high tech explosion which saw thousands of new words / terms created to explain new world industries and technologies along with hijacking everyday speech which included nicking the most gentle of words including cloud, green and stream.

Thanks to technology advances Boolean is the remedy to this communication dilemma.

What impact does Boolean have on you as a individual and your business into the near future?… Apply the discipline and you’ll shine on the web whilst ignoring the discipline will see your online foot print weaken and commercial efforts stunted by information overload.

Into 2012 replace your existing new year resolutions with getting to grips with Boolean… To my mind, it really is that important.

“HOT TIPS” IN FINDING A NEW JOB VIA THE SEARCH ENGINES AND SOCIAL MEDIA BY VAUGHAN STOREY AT LEADING EDGE CONSULTING

February 28, 2011 · Posted in Discussion Forum · Comment

Reading recruiter forums on the Web and chatting to several HR Officers and Search Consultants this year their biggest dilemma is finding suitable people whilst those looking for work are no long receiving the quality nor quantity of response that they have been used to.

The key reason behind these problems is that the job boards are now being used by loads more people from many walks of life, which is making it increasingly difficult for individuals to stand out from the crowd.

To explain, Google the name Phillip Jones today and you will find 487 000 references … Could you find a specific Mr Jones? … On the search engines recruiters rely on key words to spot people …Today there are 65 742 CV’s on PNET that carry the word SAP, 58 037 with the word Payroll in ‘em somewhere and a staggering 120 342 people who have used the word Banking in their resume … I just gulped because these are intimidating numbers.

To get around this massive challenge, Search Companies including ourselves use speed-reading technologies to quickly and economically pluck single individuals out of hundreds and thousands of resumes for specific opportunities.  Hence the trick nowadays is to design your on-line resume to be spotted by the speed-reading programs.

Below I have compiled some hot tips to improve your on-line led career prospects.

Tip one : Actively apply for vacancies that are relevant to you … I know, mundane but you will be surprised at how many people don’t.

Tip two: Trim back your online resume to a “Taster” format only detailing your last 2-3 years of work experience and omitting any facts that are not directly related to your core attributes.

Build this by including as many everyday key words that you can which describe both your occupation and industry and be sure to include your full name and DOB.

Tip three:  Should your professional profile enable you to be employable in more than one occupation, build multiple taster resumes to reflect each of these talent / experience profiles and pop them all on the search engines…This is a international trick which works very well.

Tip four :  Detail the exact suburbs and towns that you live and work in.

Tip five: Use standard English in your CV and steer clear of ( ) # ++ “ “ abbreviations and unnecessary words breaks (-) even remove coma’s because speed reading programmes work best with clean documents.

Tip six : Should you be urgently looking for work, resubmit your resume onto the job boards everyday to stay on top of the pile.

Tip seven: Set yourself up on LinkedIn .. It’s simple to do and adds to your professional visibility.

In closing, Internationally Search work has been undertaken by “Speed Reading” technologies for many years, locally the demand is relatively new because the computer literate population was relatively small until quite recently… Hence we are simply catching up as more people get on-line.

With speed reading done and dusted….I’m under the bonnet working on SMS resumes to cater for the Blue Collar workforce .. Are the Job Boards tinkering around with this one yet?
