“HOT TIPS” IN FINDING A NEW JOB VIA THE SEARCH ENGINES AND SOCIAL MEDIA BY VAUGHAN STOREY AT LEADING EDGE CONSULTING
Reading recruiter forums on the Web and chatting to several HR Officers and Search Consultants this year their biggest dilemma is finding suitable people whilst those looking for work are no long receiving the quality nor quantity of response that they have been used to.
The key reason behind these problems is that the job boards are now being used by loads more people from many walks of life, which is making it increasingly difficult for individuals to stand out from the crowd.
To explain, Google the name Phillip Jones today and you will find 487 000 references … Could you find a specific Mr Jones? … On the search engines recruiters rely on key words to spot people …Today there are 65 742 CV’s on PNET that carry the word SAP, 58 037 with the word Payroll in ‘em somewhere and a staggering 120 342 people who have used the word Banking in their resume … I just gulped because these are intimidating numbers.
To get around this massive challenge, Search Companies including ourselves use speed-reading technologies to quickly and economically pluck single individuals out of hundreds and thousands of resumes for specific opportunities. Hence the trick nowadays is to design your on-line resume to be spotted by the speed-reading programs.
Below I have compiled some hot tips to improve your on-line led career prospects.
Tip one : Actively apply for vacancies that are relevant to you … I know, mundane but you will be surprised at how many people don’t.
Tip two: Trim back your online resume to a “Taster” format only detailing your last 2-3 years of work experience and omitting any facts that are not directly related to your core attributes.
Build this by including as many everyday key words that you can which describe both your occupation and industry and be sure to include your full name and DOB.
Tip three: Should your professional profile enable you to be employable in more than one occupation, build multiple taster resumes to reflect each of these talent / experience profiles and pop them all on the search engines…This is a international trick which works very well.
Tip four : Detail the exact suburbs and towns that you live and work in.
Tip five: Use standard English in your CV and steer clear of ( ) # ++ “ “ abbreviations and unnecessary words breaks (-) even remove coma’s because speed reading programmes work best with clean documents.
Tip six : Should you be urgently looking for work, resubmit your resume onto the job boards everyday to stay on top of the pile.
Tip seven: Set yourself up on LinkedIn .. It’s simple to do and adds to your professional visibility.
In closing, Internationally Search work has been undertaken by “Speed Reading” technologies for many years, locally the demand is relatively new because the computer literate population was relatively small until quite recently… Hence we are simply catching up as more people get on-line.
With speed reading done and dusted….I’m under the bonnet working on SMS resumes to cater for the Blue Collar workforce .. Are the Job Boards tinkering around with this one yet?

Finding work and identifying talent in the Internet and Social Media world by Vaughan Storey at Leading Edge Consulting
With over 1.6 Million jobs disappearing in South African’s recession and millions of people hitting the pavements across the UK and Europe over the past 2 years, the fact is that the value chain between employers, recruiters and job seekers is broken and that jobs board companies and recruiters have to up their games to rectify a very serious social problem
Looking at the job boards, until recently there were primary the home of ICT and Financial Services related recruitment activities.
Into 2010 the broader general public started to use these same search engines in the same way that people are now confidant using Internet banking.
Hence, the number of new members has increased sharply with a Funeral Director and a Nun being recent appearances on PNET
As the reporting capabilities of the search engines are crude and that most people are computer literate, when looking for Systems Specialists for example, the quality / effectiveness of key word searching is rapidly disappearing.
Indeed we expect that common key works such as SAP and SQL will go back no more than 48 hours before hitting the 100 page lock out on PNET before the end of 2011.
Using LinkedIn as a complimentary talent pool we are seeing the same trend with SA memberships presently climbing at over 1600 a month.
“Vaughan, it’s Monday, all very interesting … But where are you going with this” .. I hear you mumble.
Firstly, Recruitment Companies must transform themselves into talent collection organizations else they will be locked out of their prospective skills pool by the sheer volume of people making themselves available for work via the job portals and to take advantage of Social Media’s such as LinkedIn.
Secondly, HR Departments must invest in talent acquisition technologies and processes to empower their HR Departments and Talent Scots to be effective in this new market place which has taken even Google and Microsoft by surprise.
Thirdly, recruiters need to start running proper ads again with people looking for work responding to vacancies because recruiters can seldom find you when they need to because of the candidate number crunch problem
Fourthly, should you be looking for work via the internet simplify your resume.
To explain…As market leaders in E-Recruitment, we use a software programme to speed read 1000’s of resumes a day … Flaws lay in ( ) C++ # “ “ and abbreviations…If our system cannot find you because of the aforementioned glips ….. How are other recruiters / talent scouts going to identify you?
Another good tip in getting yourself spotted in the Internet labour market is to use your Job Board CV as a taster … Only go back 2-3 years of professional experience and use several strong key words that are specific to your industry and occupation to make your resume “bubble to the surface” when people are searching for your expertise on the web.
Fifthly, many people have been taking pops at the job board companies recently …. Now having explained the scenario, I am sure you will agree that they have simply been caught short by positive market confidence.
If I were running a Job Portal I’d simply build separate job boards for specific markets … Problem solved
Today the bar to entry into any talent related industry including …. Recruitment, Body Shopping, Professional Services is dependant upon constantly transforming peoples attributes into tradable assets whilst staying in step with all of the talent available by managing the inter relationships between the Job Boards, Social Networking sites and in-house databases.
In closing, the search for talent has transformed rapidly from an entrepreneurial passive occupation into an exacting science that warrants dedication, specialist expertise and diligent processes to identity individual professional profiles out of 100 000’s of potentials.
